Legends gain win in opener Saturday, February 3, 2007
Quarterback Kevin Mason accounted for six touchdowns Friday as the Canton Legends opened defense of their league title with a 60-46 win over the Johnstown Riverhawks at Johnstown, Pa. Mason was 12-of-24 passing for 181 yards and five scores, adding another on the ground. Randall Lane caught three of the TD passes, including scores from 34 and 38 yards. Chris Archie caught the other two, while fullback Rob Hannah added two short scoring runs.
Canton led, 6-0, after one quarter then put up 27 second-quarter points to take control. Deforest Hart's 49-yard kickoff return gave the Legends a 20-7 lead with 7:34 left in the half. Canton led, 33-20, at the break.
Canton won the American Indoor Football League in 2006 and begins 2007 as the favorites in the reshaped American Indoor Football Association.
The Legends have 14 Division I players on their 30-man roster. By contrast, the Riverhawks opened the season with 13 indoor rookies.
Johnstown wide receiver Quenteen Robinson scored four times for the Riverhawks on catches of 35, 30, 4 and 32 yards.
The Legends' home opener is at 7 p.m. Friday vs. Erie at Canton Memorial Civic Center.
