Jamestown expected to get minor pro hockey team
Published: July 17. 2007 4:07PM
The Mid-Atlantic Hockey League is expected to announce that it will place a franchise in Jamestown, N.Y., for the inaugural season this fall.
The MAHL has called a news conference for 2 p.m. Thursday at Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena. The public is invited.
MAHL president and founder Andrew Haines, who also founded the Erie Freeze indoor football team and at one time owned the entire league in which the Freeze played, and MAHL commissioner Jim Riggs are scheduled to attend the news conference, along with arena general manager Michael Ferguson.
The MAHL has been described as a Single-A developmental rookie league. Franchises already have been launched in Indiana, Pa.; Wooster, Ohio; Valley Forge; and Belle Vernon (Mon Valley). Tryouts for most teams are yet to come.
Ticket prices in three markets are between $12 and $25. Valley Forge has not publicized its ticket prices.
Teams will play 25 home games and 25 road games in a regular season scheduled to begin in November.
Each team will have a 20-player roster, with 16 players active at any one time. Salary will be up to $5,000 per week per team.
League rules include a 3-minute, 4-on-4 sudden-death overtime, followed when necessary by a shootout; touch-up icing ; and tag-up offsides. The league says it will ignore the red line except for icing and face-offs.

Good thing Erie already has the Otters at Tullio. Though I wouldn't be surprised if Haines tried to put a team in one of our smaller rinks like JMC or the Igloo and claim his team to be superior.
