DANNY BURNHAM NAMED WIFL FAN OF THE YEAR
COLUMBUS, Ga. – Danny Burnham thought his association with indoor football went kaput along with the Rome Renegades the day his hometown team announced it would cease operations.
The World Indoor Football League had other ideas.
Knowing that his internet ID of “Gonzo13” has “cyber cred” throughout the internet indoor football community and of his experience with the Renegades’ gameday operation, the WIFL offered Burnham the opportunity to launch its fansite/message board.
Both sides got a little more out of the bargain.
Not only did Burnham remain involved in indoor football, the defensive line coach at Model High School in Rome, Ga., became an integral part of the WIFL’s inaugural season communications effort as a broadcaster, freelance writer and gameday administrator.
He’s the WIFL fan of the year, but it doesn’t seem like he’s a fan.
“I forget he’s a fan because I consider Danny a professional,’’ said WIFL Director of Communications. “It’s like having another staff member on board.
“It’s always important to have someone qualified running your fan site, but it’s an additional bonus when he can bring more to the table than just post a few sentences, update a score or do silly fan things,” Ryan added. “I’ve been very fortunate to have a great collection of stat crews, photographers, broadcast talent, interns and Danny in this inaugural season.”
Shuttling between Augusta and Columbus, Burnham would write the game story for the visiting team’s web site or join Ryan on the Spartans’ audiocast on wifl.ezstream.com as a color commentator. ESPN had Mike and Mike on its arena football broadcasts, the WIFL now had a “Dan and Dan.”
After one Daytona Beach-Columbus game, Burnham’s game story for the Thunder web site was sent to the Daytona Beach media. The Daytona Beach News-Journal elected to run Burnham’s story rather than the one it received from the local Columbus paper, which led to Burnham being used as a freelance writer covering the Thunder’s final two road games.
"This season has been one great experience after another, and the work I've done has opened some other doors for me professionally,” said Burnham.
At the World Indoor Bowl, Burnham oversaw press row and wrote the lead game story when Augusta downed Columbus for the league title.
For his efforts, Burnham has been presented a 3-day vacation in Daytona Beach, Fla, at the Holiday Inn Express, conveniently located minutes away from the World’s Most Famous Beach and Daytona International Speedway.
Working in conjunction with the Daytona Beach Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, the WIFL provided vacations to reward its championship game MVP, coach of the year and fan of the year.
