Sioux Falls, SD – The Sioux Falls Storm (17-0) are the 2012 IFL Champions and in doing so have completed the first perfect season in IFL history.
The Storm defeated the Tri-Cities Fever, 59-32, at the Sioux Falls Arena Saturday night and have now won back-to-back IFL championships. The Tri-Cities Fever finish the 2012 IFL season with a 14-3 record.
DL Jeremiah Price was named the 2012 United Bowl MVP after recording six tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks, and two safeties.
The 2012 United Bowl was the fourth meeting between the two teams dating back to last season’s United Bowl in which the Storm defeated the Fever 37-10. The Storm have never lost to the Fever and have now defeated them three times this season.
The Fever got off to an early lead as First Team All-IFL DB Lionell Singleton intercepted the reigning IFL MVP Chris Dixon on just the fourth play from scrimmage. Singleton then returned the ball 48 yards for a touchdown to give the Fever an early 7-0 lead. The Storm and the Fever would then each add another touchdown in the quarter. The Fever led the Storm 14-10 at the end of the first.
The close battle continued into the second quarter as Tri-Cities Kicker Brady Beeson kicked a 45-yard field goal on the Fever’s first drive of the quarter. Beeson completed three field goals on the night. Later in the second the Storm committed their second turnover of the night as Fever DB Deleon Gause stripped WR Carl Sims of the ball and Fever DB Lionell Singleton recovered it.
The subsequent Fever drive would stall however and ended in another Brady Beeson field goal. After that, the Storm would go on an 12 point unanswered run to end the first half. The Storm added a four- yard TD by WR Carl Sims and later United Bowl MVP Jeremiah Price got his first safety of the night as he sacked Fever QB Houston Lillard in the endzone. K Parker Douglass would also add another field goal just six seconds before the half. The Storm went into halftime with a narrow 22-20 lead over the Fever.
The third quarter was all about the Sioux Falls Storm. After allowing the Fever to get another field goal on their opening drive, the Storm did not allow the Fever to score another point in the entire quarter. The Storm were able to add a 24-yard TD pass as Chris Dixon hit WR James Terry. The 24-yard pass was one of the few long passes of the night as the Fever defense did an admirable job in containing the explosive trio of Sioux Falls receivers.
However, the momentum of the game took a drastic turn in the middle of the third quarter. Storm KR Korey Williams came up with the specials teams play of the game as he returned a missed Fever field goal 55 yards for a TD. The huge special teams play extended the Storm’s lead to 36-23. The Storm would later add another safety by DL Jeremiah Price and another James Terrry TD catch, his second of the night. The Storm finished the third quarter leading 45-23. The Storm outscored the Fever 23-3 in the quarter.
At the start of the fourth quarter the Fever were able to add a safety of their own when Chris Dixon committed intentional grounding in the endzone. On the ensuing drive, the Fever offense finally made it into the endzone for the first time since the first quarter. QB Houston Lillard hit RB Dennis Kennedy on a 19-yard touchdown pass and helped pull the score to 45- 32. However, that is as close as the final score would get.
Later in the fourth, the Storm were able to add another touchdown as WR James Terry ran the ball in from nine yards out for his third TD of the game and help push the score to 52-32. The Fever,on their next possession, were able to drive all the way down to the Storm one yard line but were stifled three consecutive times by the Storm defense and the Storm took over on downs. KR/RB Korey Williams added the Storm’s final touchdown of the night as he grabbed a 16-yard pass from Chris Dixon.
IFL MVP Chris Dixon finished the game with 181 passing yards and four touchdowns. He also added 58 rushing yards. James Terry led the Storm in pass receptions as he grabbed seven passes for 57 yards and two touchdowns.
Fever QB Houston Lillard finished the game with 163 passing yards and one touchdown. He also led the Fever in rushing yards with 12. WR Steven Whitehead led all receivers with 8 receptions for 78 yards.
