In one week Sioux Falls Storm QB Chris Dixon will take the field for his fourth United Bowl in as many years.
Dixon’s IFL resume reads like a list of video game accomplishments. Three- time IFL MVP, three- time IFL Offensive Player of the Year, three- time United Bowl MVP, and owner of almost every major IFL passing record. He is also second in IFL history in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.
Needless to say, there are very few things that Sioux Falls Storm QB Chris Dixon has not accomplished in his illustrious IFL career. What does he still have to play for? Well according to him… a lot.
“The number one things are my teammates, friends and fans. The goal is to win championships and I just want to win as many as I can. My teammates make me want to play better and these are the results that you get,” stated Dixon.
Dixon also claims the Sioux Falls fans play a large role in keeping him motivated. “The Sioux Falls fans are the number one fans in the IFL. The team and the city are so interconnected. (The fans) are absolute football fanatics.”
It has been three full years since Dixon won his first IFL championship. In 2009, Dixon was member of the now-defunct Billings Outlaws. As a member of the Outlaws, Dixon quickly made a name for himself by racking up 2,961 total yards, good for second in the IFL. He then led his team to claim the first IFL United Bowl trophy in a bout over the River City Rage. Dixon followed that up with another impressive campaign in 2010. He led the Outlaws to another 12-2 record and then beat the Sioux Falls Storm in the 2010 United Bowl.
In two years he had led the Outlaws to a 24-4 regular season record and one of the greatest two year runs in the history of the IFL. However in 2010 a tornado heavily damaged the arena the Outlaws played in. The Outlaws were forced to shut down operations and Dixon joined the team he had just beat in the United Bowl, the Sioux Falls Storm.
In 2011, Dixon led the Storm to a 13-1 record and a 2011 United Bowl victory over the Tri-Cities Fever. Now Dixon faces a rematch of the 2011 United Bowl, as the Storm will take on the Tri-Cities Fever again on July 14th.
But Dixon knows this fourth championship appearance cannot be taken for granted and he knows exactly what it has taken to get him to this point.“Hard work and no excuses,” said Dixon. “I work hard every offseason and I treat (this championship) just like I am going into my first championship.”
He is also quick to deflect the attention from himself when given the chance including the sole responsibility for his third IFL MVP. “It is a great honor and I am happy for me and the team. However, football is a team sport and I have to give credit to my team first and foremost.”
After all his accolades and championship appearances it may seem strange but Dixon still has not accomplished everything he wants to do. “Four championships as well as 100 touchdowns. I want to push myself to be better every single year.”
Dixon will have his chance at a fourth IFL championship on Saturday, July 14th when the Sioux Falls Storm (16-0) take on the Tri-Cities Fever (14-2) in the 2012 United Bowl. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CT.
