ALBANY, GA (June 23, 2012) – The Albany Panthers (10-2) found themselves up 17-7 to start the game and were able to maintain and add to that lead as they eliminated the Columbus Lions (6-7), 60-36, in front of 5,341 fans on Phoebe Field at the Albany James H Gray Civic Center on Saturday night.
Head coach Lucious Davis said. "Hey we are going back to the championship again."
Albany’s QB Darnell Kennedy finished by connecting on 12-of-20 passes for 169 yards, six touchdowns, and one rushing TD in the victory. Leading the receivers were Antwone “The Legend” Savage, who had four receptions for 87 yards and four touchdowns, while Clenton Rafe had four receptions for 43 receiving yards and one touchdown. Antwontis Cutts added one reception for 31 yards and one touchdown. Derrick “The Beast” Winbush had 12 carries for 45 yards and one TD.
Leading the way defensively were Chauncey “Sack City” Debose with 6.0 tackles and three sacks. Ryan Babb added 9.0 total tackles, while Cory Rue and Damian Daniels had 6.0 total tackles each.
Kennedy started the second half with a TD pass to Antwontis Cutts that he took for a 31-yard touchdown and pushed the Lions lead to 44-30 with 10:00 remaining in the third quarter. Columbus would answer with a one-yard Gerald Gales touchdown run to make it, 44-36. The Lions would then go onto outscore the Panthers 13-6 in the third quarter.
Albany kept momentum going when they scored 16 unanswered points – Savage for a touchdown and Kennedy running in for one – to lock up the game in the fourth quarter. Columbus was unable to hold serve or score in the final quarter and came away with the 60-36 loss.
The Panthers will host the first PIFL Championship game Saturday, June 30th, at 7:30pm.
