Ruff Riders to play 'Bounty Bowl' exhibition in Snyder
The Abilene Ruff Riders and Corpus Christi Hammerheads will meet in a "Bounty Bowl" exhibition game April 14 at The Coliseum in Snyder.
The game, sponsored by the Lone Star Football League and VIP Sports, is part of a two-day event, will include appearances by former Dallas Cowboys Bill Bates and Everson Walls, food and drink, and a concert with performers to be announced later.
Players on the winning team will split the $1,000 bounty.
Tickets go on sale Feb. 14.
Ruff Riders acting general manager Randy Sanders said this will be a special event where a $25 ticket will be worth two days of activities in addition to the football game.
"The day before, we'll be in town doing some football-related things along with the local schools," Sanders said. "On Saturday, there will be a tailgate party with celebrities there to sign autographs. Bill Bates and Everson Walls have already agreed to do this."
Sanders said the ticket gives access to a tailgate party, access to the game and the postgame concert.
"It's just going to be something that no one's ever done, having professional football in Snyder Texas," Sanders said.
Sanders said he and Kris Randolph, owner of VIP Sports, a Snyder-based company that provides trip packages and transportation to major sporting events, came up with the idea of packaging football with a carnival-type atmosphere.
Sanders said he expects a sellout of the 4,000-seat Coliseum.
"I think that with all the things that are happening with this game, it's going to be a fun weekend," he said. "We're hoping to draw from Lubbock, Snyder and all the little towns around (Snyder) that can't come to six games (in Abilene). They can come to a real event, and the $1,000 bonus means a lot to these players,
"They don't get paid a lot of money. They get a $25 win bonus and they take that to heart. So the players are excited."
Sanders said if the Bounty Bowl proves successful, the league will try it again next year with games around Texas.
Sanders and Ruff Riders coach Joe Brannen said the extra game will not be a hardship on the players since it comes early in the season.
The Ruff Riders open the regular season March 31 at home against Corpus Christi.
