January 7 Tryouts Offer Chance For Lions Players, Junior Dancer Hopefuls
December 28, 2011 - Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) Columbus Lions
Columbus, GA -- The Columbus Lions will hold player tryouts next Saturday, January 7, 2012 at the Columbus Civic Center, located at 400 4th Street in Columbus, GA. The Lions, now in the new Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) have made five straight playoff appearances and won three division titles, compiling an all-time .750 winning percentage. They won the 2010 Southern Indoor Football League Championship and reached the 2011 Eastern Conference championship game.
Also taking place on January 7, starting 9:30 a.m. at the Civic Center, will be a Dance Camp and tryouts for the "Junior Lady Lions" dance team, for girls ages 8-13. Run by the Lady Lions Dance Team and Lions co-owner Angela Wagenti, the dance camp takes place in the hospitality suites above the South end zone (Chattahoochee River side). Details of both events follow those of the player tryouts below.
Registration begins at 8:00 AM and the tryout starts promptly at 9:00 AM. Participants should pre-register online at www.columbuslions.net by clicking on the tryout link on the home page. The pre-registration fee is $40.00 and should be in the form of a check or money order and mailed to the Lions office at 400 4th Street, Columbus, GA, 31901. Registration the day of the tryout will be $50.00 and will only be accepted in the form of cash or money order (no checks will be accepted). Participants should wear athletic shorts, tennis shoes or cleats for a field turf grass surface. No metal cleats will be permitted. Players will be tested in the 40- yard dash, 20-yard short shuttle, and the "L" drill. Following the testing, participants will do position-specific drills and 1-on-1's. The tryout is expected to last 3 hours.
The Lions' prior September 10 open tryout produced Atlanta-area wide receiver Michael Figgers, who impressed Head Coach Jason Gibson enough to bring him back as a potential training camp invitee.
From 2007-11, Head Coach Jason Gibson and staff have produced seven Players of the Year and have led the league in All-Pro selections three times. 27 players have signed NFL, Canadian Football League (CFL), or Arena Football League (AFL) contracts, among them: Troy Bergeron (WR - Dallas Cowboys), Chris Bradwell (DL - Toronto Argonauts), Dustin Doe (LB - Winnipeg Blue Bombers), Jauron Dailey (DE - Montreal Alouettes), Carlos Martinez (K - Georgia Force), Lonnell DeWalt (WR - Pittsburgh Power), Charleston Grey (OL - Pittsburgh Power), Chris Terrell (OL - Pittsburgh Power), Dion Small (OL - Georgia Force), Durrell Mapp (LB - Toronto Argonauts), Tremaine Jehovah (DL - Philadelphia Soul) and Terrance Crosby (OL - Iowa Barnstormers).
The Lions finished the 2011 season with 12 wins and 2 losses and won the Southern Division Title for the second time in four years by defeating the Albany Panthers on June 4th. They head into 2012 returning four-time Defensive Player of the Year, Damian Daniels, who was discovered at an open tryout. "These tryouts are a great way to discover new talent," said Head Coach Jason Gibson. "The southeast is a hotbed for football talent and we just hope to discover or rediscover some guys that can help us." Gibson hopes to sign a player or two based on the talent level.
Players are encouraged to bring film to the tryout or mail it to the coaching staff at 400 4th street, Columbus, GA 31901. For more information or questions, contact Coach Gibson at 706-322-3336 or jason@columbuslions.net.
