E.J. Nemeth, Aaron Yarbough Tally Career Highs as Baltimore Runs Record to 5-0
BALTIMORE, MD (April 13, 2010) – The Baltimore Mariners ran their record to 5-0 by defeating the New Jersey Revolution 61-27 behind a career best seven touchdown passes from E.J. Nemeth and career highs in receptions (11) and receiving yards (134) by Aaron Yarbough. Isaiah Grier also increased his league leading touchdown total to 15 with two rushing scores and one touchdown reception.
Seeking their first win of the season the Revolution (0-4) mounted a short 11-yard drive after taking over possession at their own 20 to start the game. Kicker Craig Pinto closed the drive with a 34-yard field goal to provide New Jersey with the early 3-0 lead.
Baltimore quickly rallied back after a 25-yard kick return by Richard Johnson started the Mariners first drive at their 22. Nemeth capped off a four-play, 28-yard drive with his first scoring toss of the game by hitting Yarbough with a 13-yard score. Following a missed extra point, Baltimore led 6-3.
After a missed field goal attempt by Pinto, the Mariners took over at their 17. Nemeth once again led an efficient drive as the Mariners travelled 33 yards in four minutes and 42 seconds, culminating with a Nemeth to Damon Harrison touchdown reception giving the Mariners a 13-3 lead as the 1st quarter closed.
Pinto opened the scoring in the second quarter with a 41-yard field goal, but the Mariners countered with another Nemeth to Yarbough score and boosted the Baltimore margin to 20-6.
Heading into this game the Mariners had won nine of their last ten regular season games, had started off their season at 4-0, and had won this season’s games by an average of nearly 29 points a game. All of that seemed secure at this point in the game with just 5:35 left in the half. New Jersey, however, had other ideas.
New Jersey quarterback Bill Winters led the Revolution on a four play, 37-yard drive ending with a Winters to Quinten Lopez 12-yard touchdown reception at the 1:13 mark of the second quarter. Just forty seconds later Nemeth hit Stokes for his fourth touchdown pass of the game and a 26-13 Mariners edge.
Just when it appeared the momentum had swung Baltimore’s way, Winters connected with Collis Martin on a 29-yard point producer with 21 seconds in the half. The Mariners mounted a quick four-play drive, but J.R. Cipra’s 34-yard field goal attempt struck the Mennen Arena ceiling before passing through the uprights and was ruled a dead ball and no good. Giving the Mennen crowd more to cheer about as the teams entered the halftime locker room with the Mariners holding a slim 26-20 edge over a club they had defeated in week two 68-23.
The early portion of the second half started much like the first ended. Nemeth led Baltimore on a three-play, 28-yard drive that was slowed by penalties and lasted 5:05, but Nemeth hit Grier on a screen pass and he bolted 18 yards for the score.
New Jersey quickly responded as Winters hit Lopez on a 45-yard scoring pass to reduce the Mariners margin to 33-27 with 8:55 remaining in the third period of play.
The Revolution then produced a rare stop against the Mariners offense as Nemeth was sacked on a fourth and one from the New Jersey six by Karl Pfistner and Brian Smith. The Revos then took over from their own ten with 5:55 left in the third and their Mennen faithful feeling their first win of the season was in reach.
After moving the ball 19 yards in five plays, Pinto missed a 36 yard field goal attempt and the Mariners gained possession at their own ten. Sparked by two completions from Nemeth to Yarbough totaling 36 yards, Baltimore compiled another scoring drive; capped off with a Grier two yard score from the Mariners wildcat formation giving Baltimore a 40-27 lead as time expired in the third.
Despite New Jersey’s efforts to hand the Mariners their first loss, the fourth quarter was owned by Coach Chris Simpson’s club as Nemeth tossed his career-high sixth and seventh touchdown passes of the game and Grier gained his 15th touchdown of the season, after Baltimore backup QB Matt Folke entered the game, providing the Mariners with the final 61-27 margin.
A rejuvenated Mariners defense stifled the Revolution in the fourth quarter as New Jersey totaled just nine plays for -11 yards in three, fourth-quarter drives. The Baltimore defense forced two turnovers on downs, Armar Watson ended a drive with an interception, and on the final kickoff of the game, with just seconds to go, the Mariners’ Adam Goloboski forced and recovered an Elliot White fumble, allowing Folke to rush for three yards to run out the clock.
On the game Nemeth completed 22 of 33 passes for 263 yards and seven touchdown passes. On the season Nemeth has now thrown 18 touchdown passes and only one interception. Yarbough led all receivers with 11 receptions for 134 yards and Harrison, making his first professional appearance and start, totaled four receptions for 42 yards and a touchdown. Grier led all scorers with three touchdowns.
On the defensive side of the ball Melik Brown, Daniel Orlebar and Goloboski all tallied sacks and Jermaine Thaxton led the Mariners with four tackles, while Desmond Maul and Orlebar added three each.
The Mariners (5-0) now travel to Reading, Pennsylvania where they will face the defending American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) champions, the Express, who currently sit in third place in the AIFA East Conference at 3-2. The game is slated for Saturday, April 17th at 7:00 PM at the Sovereign Center.
