MARINERS QUEST FOR THE RING GETS TOUGH WITH THREE GAME ROAD TRIP
BALTIMORE, MD (April 10, 2010) – After some much needed time off coming off a hard fought win against the Richmond Raiders, the undefeated Baltimore Mariners will hit the road this month for a three game road trip. The road trip starts in Morristown, New Jersey at the Mennan Arena against the New Jersey Revolution.
The last time these two teams faced off in the Mariners regular season home opener, the Mariners were dominant in every aspect of the game. Mariners quarterback E.J. Nemeth lit up the 1st Mariner Arena with five touchdown passes and completed 60% of his passes. Isaiah Grier got his game back on track, rushing for 32 yards and two touchdowns on ten carries. Overall, the Mariners racked up 207 offensive yards on the New Jersey defense. As a matter of fact, the game was already over after a 51-10 halftime score.
The Mariners defense turned up the heat big time in Baltimore’s home opener. Mariners’ defensive backs Richard Johnson and Armar Watson denied any kind of aerial assault from the Revolution offense, as they totaled six interceptions (Johnson -1, Watson – 5). The Mariners sacked both New Jersey quarterbacks that played, led by Fearon Wright with two total sacks.
The Mariners will, once again, look to make an example out of the New Jersey Revolution. In order for the Mariners to come out with another win this Sunday, here are my keys to victory:
Put Them Away Early: The scoring was frequent and often the last time these two met for the Mariners offense. Mariners’ quarterback E.J. Nemeth threw for five touchdown passes and running back Isaiah Grier rushed for two more. After the first half, the score was so lopsided; Baltimore went on cruise control and coasted to a victory.
Turnover Machine: The Mariners have done a great job forcing turnovers and creating problems for opposing offenses. It all starts with the front three; led by defensive lineman Fearon Wright who is second in the AIFA with six total sacks. Not too far behind him is Melik Brown, who has tallied four takedowns on the season. Pressure on the quarterback leads to bad throws and interceptions, and Mariners defensive back Armar Watson has reaped the benefits of those bad throws. Watson leads the AIFA with seven interceptions; two returned for a touchdown. Five of those seven interceptions came against the Revolution offense.
Not Crowned Yet: This is the biggest key to victory for not just this weekend, but for the three game road trip. Yes, we are undefeated and have fought hard to get where we are at right now. However, we cannot get comfortable because we still have a long way to go in our journey for the AIFA Championship.
This is a tough road trip coming up for our Baltimore Mariners. New Jersey remembers what we did to them, and they will be looking for revenge this Sunday at the Mennen Arena. We might not be able to put them away as quick as we did, so the Mariners will have to remain focused throughout the entire game. Just like Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis tells his defense; 60 minutes!
The Mariners must stay focused and keep the ship steered in the right direction. We can’t see the ring yet, but the fog may soon be lifting to see that glimmering light off in the distance if all goes well during this three game road trip. Let’s get it done!
