MARINERS HOPE TO REMAIN UNDEFEATED BEFORE THEY HIT THE ROAD FOR THREE WEEKS
BALTIMORE, MD (March 26, 2010) – The Mariners end their three game home stand this Sunday, and they will face an unfamiliar, but worthy foe in the Richmond Raiders. The Mariners are on an absolute roll, especially after their dominating performance over the Fayetteville Guard last week. Some of our players are familiar with the Richmond Raiders, as they played against the expansion team during the 2010 AIFA Kickoff Classic. The Raiders got off to a slow start, dropping their season opener against the Reading Express, but rebounded quickly, defeating the New Jersey Revolution last week. The Raiders present new challenges for the Mariners; in order for the Mariners to come out with another win this Sunday, here are my keys to victory:
Stuff the Run: After two games, the Richmond Raiders have boasted an outstanding running game. Raiders’ running back Wilmont Perry leads the AIFA in rushing, with 110 yards on the ground. Perry is second to Mariners running back Isaiah Grier in touchdowns with five, and averages 55 yards per game. Early reports are Perry is injured for this week’s game, but the Richmond running game should still pose challenges with a solid O-line. The Mariners run defense will have to buckle their chinstraps and get nasty against the Richmond second ranked running game. Luckily for us, we have the second ranked run defense in the AIFA, allowing a mere 12.3 rushing yards per game.
A Worthy Opponent: Consequently, the Mariners also have an outstanding running game. Mariners’ running back Isaiah Grier leads the AIFA in rushing touchdowns with six and is second in the league with 86 total rushing yards. Easy enough, right…not so fast. Richmond has the number one run defense in the AIFA, only allowing 1.2 yards per gain and four rushing touchdowns.
Talk To Me, Goose: Another challenge for the Mariners will be navigating through the air against the Raiders pass defense. The Richmond defensive backs have picked off six passes this season, and allowed 152 yards per game. Mariners quarterback E.J. Nemeth has been amazing this year, throwing 11 touchdown strikes and just one interception. He will have to overcome an outstanding pass defense to get the Mariners in the win column again.
Games Are Won Here: I can rest easy for this game knowing that the Mariners have been very efficient in the red zone and on third down conversions. Baltimore’s offense ranks tied for 1st in the league in red zone efficiency, going 8-8 with seven touchdowns and one field goal. The Mariners have converted over half of their 3rd downs this season, going 14 of 25.
This is what every Baltimore football fan loves; good ‘ol smash mouth football. Great running games vs. stifling run defenses. This game reminds me of the Ravens/Steelers battles during the regular season of the NFL. Both teams will come out of the gates trying to test their running games against each other run defense. If you love this kind of football, this is the game for you.
