MARINERS USE SMASH MOUTH FOOTBALL TO DOMINATE FAYETTEVILLE
BALTIMORE, MD (March 23, 2010) – Since the days of the Baltimore Colts and their championship teams to the current days of the Baltimore Ravens and the league leading defenses of the last decade, including the 2000 World Championship team, Baltimoreans have enjoyed and embraced smash mouth football in their fare city. However, since the start of the 2010 season for the Mariners, the passing game has dazzled and amazed Baltimore football fans. With their stunning defensive performance this past Sunday, the Mariners joined the smash mouth football party, and earned them the biggest win in franchise history. For the first time in four years, a team in the AIFA recorded a shutout. This game speaks volumes about the Mariners ability to control the clock and play hard-nosed defense. Also, for the second week in a row, the Mariners have made the coveted Dwayne’s List for their efforts. The exams are in; let’s see how the Mariners did against the Fayetteville Guard.
Offense: A-
While the passing game did not light up the 1st Mariner Arena, the offense still did a solid job of controlling the clock and putting points on the board. Mariners quarterback E.J. Nemeth, The AIFA Offensive Player of the Week, had a solid day passing the ball, going 13 of 25 for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Aaron Yarbough was the leading receiver, catching seven passes for 43 yards. The Mariners passing game also converted seven first downs for the offense. The star of the offensive onslaught was Mariners running back Isaiah Grier. Grier rushed for 38 yards, averaging 2.6 yards per attempt. Grier reached the end zone four times, three rushing the ball and one touchdown catch. Overall, the offense converted five of nine third down conversions and a perfect three for three in the red zone.
Defense: A+
What an unbelievable performance from the Mariners defense last Sunday. The defense kept the Guard out of the end zone, and even out of the red zone for the entire game. The defense only allowed 21 rushing yards and 48 passing yards, and allowed only 1.7 yards per play. The defense had seven turnovers forced in this game, five interceptions and two forced fumbles. Mariners’ defensive back Jermaine Thaxon led the team with four tackles and one fumble recovery. Linebacker Adam Goloboski and defensive linemen Melik Brown and Fearon Wright terrorized Fayetteville quarterback Nick Gildersleeve, combing for six total sacks. The interceptions kept on coming, starting with Mariners linebacker Brian Bradford, who had two interceptions, one almost returned for a pick-six, and Richard Johnson, who also had two interceptions. Mariners’ defensive back Armar Watson had one interception, including a 17-yard return for a touchdown.
Special Teams: A-
Mariners’ kicker J.R. Cipra had an outstanding game, going two for three on field goals and kicking two unos. Cipra has proven to be an asset to this team, as he is now the leading scoring kicker in the AIFA. Richard Johnson also contributed to the scoring, returning a kickoff for a touchdown, and had a couple of great returns, along with Armar Watson.
