With Tough Win under their Belt, Mariners Look to Improve, Move to 2-0
BALTIMORE, MD (March 12, 2010) – Last season, we struggled on the road as a team. Going to Harrisburg, for our opening game on the road, and coming out with a 55-48 win sets the tone for the rest of season. It was an exciting game for the fans in attendance and those who watch it on our Ustream broadcast. For me, the coaching staff and the players, it let us know that we still have some work to do.
I am not sure that I believe in the term “Ugly” wins. A win is a win. Harrisburg has always played us tough and is a much improved team from last year’s squad. However, I do believe that there are areas that the Mariners need vast improvement in. The talent and the potential are there. This is a mature team that understands that we need to continue to work hard and improve. When players and coaches take ownership of this, good things happen.
Our offense clicked on all cylinders. We scored on every possession except two, a 54 yd field goal attempt that missed right and our last drive to run out the clock and end the game.
Our defense struggled with cohesiveness. It is just a matter of time (better be this week) before they begin to click, communicate and react in sync.
Our special teams, well, I’ll just say I wasn’t too happy with the effort and leave it at that.
It has been a good week of practice as we head into our home opener, March 14th at 1st Mariner Arena, against the New Jersey Revolution. New Jersey is a new expansion team in the AIFA and we are not familiar with them. However, we know that they have some very talented players on their squad. The focus has been on making ourselves better and our attitude is to prepare for each opponent as if they are the defending champions. We must be able to execute fundamentally, and with discipline in all three phases of the game. When we do that, the outcome of the game takes care of itself.
The great Green Bay Packer coach, Vince Lombardi once said about unity and teamwork, “Build for your team a feeling of oneness, of dependence on one another and of strength to be derived by unity.”
Each and every day, that is our focus. I will see you on Sunday at 4 pm.
