Baltimore Earns First Win of 2010 Campaign Powered by Six TDs by Nemeth
HARRISBURG, PA (March 6, 2010) – A couple of standouts from last season and two new team members vaulted the Baltimore Mariners to a 55-48 win over the Harrisburg Stampede in their 2010 season opener at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex on Saturday Night.
Baltimore quarterback E.J. Nemeth making his 16th consecutive start for the Mariners enjoyed his best game in a Baltimore uniform connecting on 19 of 25 passes for 258 yards, four touchdown tosses, and no interceptions for a QB rating of 157.08. The New Jersey native also added two rushing scores and 16 yards on the ground. The recipient of three of his scoring strikes was Scorpio Brown, Baltimore’s all-time leader in touchdown receptions (with 22), who totaled five catches for 66 yards.
Two newcomers, defensive lineman Melik Brown and defensive back Jermaine Thaxton, both members of the Stampede last season, made their presence felt in their new uniforms. Brown, a former North Carolina Tar Heel, was constantly in the Stampede backfield and registered 4.5 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and 2.5 tackles for a loss. After leading the American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) with 42 interceptions the Mariners defensive backfield stayed quiet most of the night, but Thaxton sealed the 55-48 victory with an interception deep in Mariners territory with just 2:23 remaining in the contest.
After three tight battles last season, the Mariners and Stampede stayed in constant contact with each other in their first 2010 match-up. Harrisburg took the early lead in the 1st quarter with a Derrick Scott 31-yard field goal at the 12:38 mark. Baltimore quickly countered with a 21-yard pass from Nemeth to Brown to give the Mariners their first lead of the season 7-3. Just 45 seconds later, Stampede QB Kelvin Robinson hit Kevin Marion on a deep pattern to enable Harrisburg to retake the lead at 9-7. After a blocked extra point attempt, the Mariners’ Armar Watson returned the block for a score (worth two points in indoor football) to knot the game at 9-9 with 9:45 still to go in the 1st quarter of play. Following a Nemeth one-yard score, a 6-yard scamper by the Stampede’s Eugene Goodman, and a uno on the ensuing kickoff, which is scored when the kicker boots the kickoff through the uprights, Harrisburg closed the first quarter with a 17-16 lead.
Both teams continued to exchange scoring blows in the second quarter. Nemeth started the exchange with a one-yard touchdown run. Robinson countered with a 1-yard run of his own to provide Harrisburg a 24-23 lead with 9:52 remaining in the half. Robinson also tossed a 27-yard score to Silas Daniels, which was sandwiched by two Nemeth scoring strikes, one to Brown and one two running back Isaiah Grier, to give the Mariners a 37-31 halftime advantage.
After Nemeth’s third touchdown pass of the night to Scorpio Brown, with 13:13 left in the third period, Baltimore enjoyed its largest lead of the night at 44-31. As was the pattern all night, Harrisburg quickly battled back, and Robinson hit Daniels with a 30-yard bomb to cut the lead to 44-38. Baltimore’s J.R. Cipra booted a 14-yard field goal and Harrisburg’s Eugene Goodman bolted in the end zone from 1-yard out to narrow Baltimore’s advantage to 47-45 as the third period closed.
Derrick Scott kicked a 28-yard field goal with 8:30 left in the game to give Harrisburg its last lead. Grier, the AIFA’s leading rusher in 2009 earned his first rushing touchdown of the season to give Baltimore the advantage for good at 54-48. Cipra added the uno on the kickoff to provide the final margin of 55-48. Harrisburg took over possession with 5:53 left in the contest. Following two dynamic plays by the Stampede’s Keith Stokes, one a catch and run worth 22-yards and then a one-handed grab for 19-yards, Harrisburg found themselves with a first and goal at the Baltimore nine. Following a Robinson one-yard run to bring the ball to the eight, on a second and goal, Robinson was rushed out of the pocket and forcing a throw in tight space, was picked off by Thaxton at the Baltimore one, with just 2:33 left. Following an eight play, 20 yard drive, Baltimore was able to run out the clock and seal their first win of the 2010 season.
Jamaal Stokes led the Mariners with six receptions for 44-yards. Forced into double duty due to a season ending injury to rookie wide receiver Mike Williams, defensive backs Armar Watson and Richard Johnson combined for six receptions and 108 yards for Baltimore. On the night the Mariners totaled 276 total yards to Harrisburg’s 257. On the defensive side of the ball Johnson led with 5.5 tackles and Thaxton followed with 5.
The Mariners open their home schedule at 1st Mariner Arena on March 14th at 4:00 PM against the New Jersey Revolution. The Mariners will be celebrating Youth Sports Night and all youths (13 and under) accompanied by a paying adult can receive a $15 ticket (with $2 facility fee) for only $10, plus the facility fee.
