Coach Simpson Looks Back at Training Camp, and Forward to Harrisburg
BALTIMORE, MD (March 3, 2010) – I’ll be honest. I’m having a tough time writing this. There are so many thoughts and actions taking place in our preparations for our opening weekend. However, there is one simple focus…Beat Harrisburg!
Training camp went very well. The players and the coaches have worked hard in all aspects of our game. I jokingly told one of our opposing coaches that, “If we come out of camp knowing which shoe to put on the right foot, we’d be doing good!” Mission accomplished. Our guys are pretty smart bunch. I’m just not into giving out too much information about where we are at as a team. What I can say is that this a great bunch of players and coaches.
We have made many adjustments to our offense and defense during the off season and the process of implementing those changes have gone smoothly. Our players have absorbed the information and have taken it from the play book and put it on the football field. The X’s and O’s are a big part of the game. However, getting players to buy into the system and utilize this knowledge in a team effort is another part of that game. Again, mission accomplished.
The most important aspect of a team is chemistry and character. Speaking to one of the players the other day, he expressed how much he felt that this team was like a family and it was the first time in his professional career that he has felt this. This player, who will remain nameless, has played with some good organizations in the past. Others have expressed the same camaraderie. You must be a family, especially when you go to battle on the gridiron each weekend. We bleed Navy and Gold. Another mission accomplished.
Harrisburg is a formidable foe. In our three games against the Stampede last season, each and every one was a battle. Each team left it all on the field when the games ended. I cannot think of a better opponent in which to open the season with. This is a challenge that we are very much looking forward to.
It’s been over seven months since we set foot on a game day field. The wait is over. It’s time for some Baltimore Mariners football! See you in Harrisburg, PA March 6th.
