Mariners Head Coach Chris Simpson Reviews the First Weekend of Camp
BALTIMORE, MD (February 24, 2010) – “Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did.” That pretty much sums up the start of Mariners training camp.
We make it hard on purpose. We want to see who has the courage to push themselves further than they have ever pushed themselves before. And then, we ask them to take one more step. Who has the character to pay the price for themselves and for their team? No one has ever drowned in their own sweat.
Our first weekend of camp was a good one for the Mariner family. It’s not all about pushing yourself physically. It’s also about pushing yourself mentally as well. It’s about finding out who will take ownership of this team and who will hold themselves accountable as well as their team mates.
This is my sixth year as a head coach in professional football. I couldn’t be more proud of a group players and coaches than I am with the 2010 team. We have a group of returning veterans, a group of new players with professional experience and a group of rookies who have come together as a unit. We had our scuffles, helmets went flying, heated words were exchanged and there was the occasional cursing of Coach Simpson (not disrespectfully though). However, we are coming together as team.
As I evaluate our first steps towards our season opener, I am fully aware of the fact that there is still a lot work left to be done. Every week, from now until we reach our ultimate goal of winning the AFIA Championship, there is work to be done. The Baltimore Mariners are no longer under anyone’s radar. We will be challenged week in and week out. How we prepare will determine our ability to meet those challenges.
The tone has been set and I like what I see from my staff and my players. This group will not be satisfied until we finish what we have started this past weekend in February, by holding that trophy in July.
