Eight Mariners Selected, Five Set to Play for AIFA All-Stars against Richmond
BALTIMORE, MD (January 7, 2010) – Eight Baltimore Mariners have been selected to play in the 2010 American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) Kickoff Classic, which is scheduled for Saturday January 23rd at 7:30 PM in the Richmond Coliseum. The Classic will feature the expansion Richmond Raiders against a team of 2009 AIFA All-Stars and featured players.
Wide receiver Scorpio Brown, kicker J.R. Cipra, linebacker Adam Goloboski, and defensive backs Andre’ Letren and Armar Watson will all play in the Classic. Running back Isaiah Grier, defensive back Richard Johnson, and wide receiver Jamaal Stokes were selected to play, but are unable to appear due to other obligations.
“This Kickoff Classic marks the official beginning of AIFA football for 2010. I am very pleased that we have a good presence in this game. I look forward to seeing some hard hitting indoor football action and some Fast, Furious, and Fun Mariners players dominating as well!” commented Mariners General Manager Greg Justice.
The Mariners playing in the Classic include several league leaders, a record breaker, and some of the team’s top performers in 2009. J.R. Cipra led all AIFA kickers in scoring in 2009 by compiling a phenomenal 191 points. The six-year veteran of the indoor game hit 34 of 63 field goal attempts, connected on 70 of 81 point after touchdowns, and hit 19 “unos” which are awarded for booting the kickoff through the uprights; a 57-60 yard kick. All of this was accomplished through ten-foot wide goal posts; about half as wide as goal posts used for outdoor football.
Also joining the All-Star team will be Armar Watson who led all AIFA defenders with 17 interceptions, including three which were returned for scores. Watson also topped the Mariners with 43.5 total tackles and 22 passes broken up. Andre’ Letren was a late addition to the Mariners, playing in only five games, but in his short time with the team he racked up 19 tackles and set an AIFA record with five interceptions in one game.
Also representing the AIFA team will be the Mariners’ Scorpio Brown. In 2009 he led the Mariners with 11 touchdown receptions while grabbing 49 catches for 567 yards. Brown is also Baltimore’s career leader with 19 scoring receptions. The final Mariner playing for the AIFA All-Stars is Adam Goloboski. The Classic will be a homecoming of sorts for Goloboski who was an All-American linebacker for the Richmond Spiders of the Atlantic 10. The former Hereford High School star suited up for only eight games for the Mariners in 2009, but quickly tallied 30.5 tackles (22 solo/17 assisted) ranking him first on the squad with 3.8 tackles per game and third in total tackles. He also ranked 14th overall in the American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) in tackles per game.
