De’yon Williams All-ACC Selection, Washington Redskins Free-Agent Signee
BALTIMORE, MD (January 6, 2010) – Former Virginia Cavalier De’yon Williams, who earned All- ACC honors in 2005 and was a free agent signee of the Washington Redskins in 2007, has signed with the Baltimore Mariners of the American Indoor Football Association (AIFA). The Mariners open the 2010 season March 6th in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and their home opener at 1st Mariner Arena is set for Sunday, March 14th at 4:00 PM.
“De'yon has the complete package you want in a receiver with both size and speed. He was very productive in his short time with Manchester last season. I l look for him to have a very competitive training camp,” said Mariners Head Coach Chris Simpson.
A 6’3”, 205 pound receiver, Williams earned Washington Post All-Metro honors as a senior for Suitland (Maryland) High School in 2002. Catching 35 receptions for 689 yards and seven touchdowns he led the Rams to their first Prince George's County 4A title.
Williams first burst onto the scene for the Virginia Cavaliers as a sophomore in 2004. He saw action in ten games and pulled in 19 catches for 261 yards and one touchdown. His top game came in a 30-10 win over Clemson, in which he caught five passes for 83 yards. Playing in all 12 games as a junior, including the Cavs’ 34-31 win over Minnesota in the Music City Bowl, he led the team in receiving with 58 receptions for 767 yards and seven scores. In the final game of the regular season he lit up the Miami Hurricanes defense for six receptions, 152 yards, and two touchdowns, including a 90-yard scoring strike. Following the season he was named to the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association/AP All-Atlantic Coast Conference team as an honorable mention selection. After an injury caused him to miss the first four games of his senior campaign, he rallied back to play in six games and tally ten grabs for 87 yards and one score. In his Virginia career he totaled 87 receptions for 1,115 yards and nine touchdowns.
Following graduation the Upper Marlboro, Maryland native was signed as a free agent by the Washington Redskins in 2007, but was later released. In 2009 he made his professional debut for the Manchester Wolves of the Arena Football League 2 (af2). Playing in only nine games he still became one of the New Hampshire club’s top receivers catching 59 receptions for 587 yards and ten touchdowns.
