Spent 2008 Training Camp with Pittsburgh Steelers, Played Arena Football in 2009
BALTIMORE, MD (October 12, 2009) – Following both a private team workout and their open tryout on Saturday, October 10th, the Baltimore Mariners announced the signing of Quarterback Mike Potts, who was a free agent signee of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2008 and also brings arena football experience to the American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) team.
“Anytime NFL quality talent knocks on your door with interest good things are happening for your football team. Mike got his first taste of indoor football last year and looks to continue his career in Baltimore. Mike will add depth to an already solid proven and competitive group of QB's,” stated Mariners General Manager Greg Justice.
Potts, who was an All-Conference and All-State performer at Middletown (Delaware) High School, threw for over 2,600 yards and 26 touchdowns in two years as a starter. As a senior he completed 69 of 149 passes and tossed 13 TDs, while running for five scores. Following his decorated prep career Potts moved south and lettered for four seasons at the College of William and Mary. For the Tribe, he again built a solid reputation as a passer. In 25 career games, including 11 starts, Potts completed 234 of 400 passes (58.5%) for 2,742 yards and 18 touchdowns against just nine interceptions. A career highlight was his 2006 performance against Towson University when he completed 28 of 44 passes for 409 yards, including a career-long 76-yard touchdown pass. His 409 yard single game tally ranks third on William and Mary’s all-time list.
Following his college career at William and Mary, Potts was signed as a free agent by the Pittsburgh Steelers in April 2008. Seeing action in two preseason games, Potts and fellow rookie Dennis Dixon were briefly the lone backups to starter Ben Roethlisberger, before the Steelers signed Byron Leftwich. Potts was then given his release before the close of the 2008 preseason. He also has had private workouts with the Buffalo Bills and Dallas Cowboys.
Potts then took his strong arm to the Manchester Wolves of the Arena Football League 2 (af2). In just seven starts he completed 167 of 255 passes for 1,849 yards and connected for 29 touchdown strikes and added five rushing touchdowns. For the 2009 season, he ranked 10th in the league with 264.10 passing yards per game. He threw for four or more touchdowns in six of his seven starts, including a season-high six touchdowns in a 53-35 win over the Quad City Steamwheelers.
