As Senior Won PSU Commitment and Loyalty Award, Played in Rose Bowl
BALTIMORE, MD (October 7, 2009) – Mike Lucian, a starting lineman at Penn State, who also helped lead Linganore High School of Frederick to the Maryland 3A State Championship, has reached a deal with the Baltimore Mariners to start his professional career with the American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) team, which calls 1st Mariner Arena home.
Lucian emerged from his high school career as the number ten ranked tight end in the nation by Scout.com in 2003. Excelling on both sides of the ball, the Frederick native tallied 40 receptions, including two for touchdowns, one interception return for a touchdown and amassed 200 tackles and 16 sacks. He also earned Associated Press All-State honors and was named to the Washington Post All-Metro team.
Following a redshirt freshman season in 2004, Lucian earned playing time for the Nittany Lions in 2005. Playing in six games on the defensive line, he made five tackles, including 0.5 for a loss. In 2006, following numerous injuries to the offensive line, Lucian showed his versatility and switched from defensive end to O-Line. He saw playing time in victories against Illinois and Temple. In 2007 he fully adapted to his new position and played in 11 games and earned seven starts on the Penn State offensive line, which ranked among the nation’s leaders with 193.77 rushing yards per game. Lucian also started in the Nittany Lions 24-17 Alamo Bowl win over Texas A&M.
In 2008 Lucian again showed his flexibility and was called on to play multiple positions. He saw action at center, right and left guard, and tight end, while also playing defensive tackle. He played in nine games, including Penn State’s matchup against the USC Trojans in the 2009 Rose Bowl. Despite a 38-24 loss to the Trojans, Coach Joe Paterno’s team finished the season ranked #8 in the country. In his time at Penn State Lucian played in a total of 27 games, starting eight on the offensive line, while tallying ten tackles and one sack on the defensive side of the ball. At the end of the 2008 season, Lucian was presented with the Penn State Coaches' Loyalty and Commitment Award.
“Mike comes to us via Penn State and with high expectations to be an immediate impact for the Mariners at multiple positions. He has good size and mobility and should be a great addition to an already stellar training camp roster that is taking shape for the 2010 AIFA season,” said Mariners General Manager Greg Justice.
