BALTIMORE, MD (October 5, 2009) – The Baltimore Mariners have announced the signing of assistant coaches Jason Blackman, Ron Meehan, and Bryan Milburn. As a group they provide a wealth of high school, college, and NFL playing experience, and vast coaching knowledge at the prep, college, and professional levels.
General Manager Greg Justice feels the Mariners have assembled an experienced and talented group of assistant coaches, “Our assistant coaches are an outstanding and unique group of men. All have local ties and were outstanding athletes in their own right in college and/or professionally. The experience they possess instantly upgrade our staff and the entire organization.”
Jason Blackman, an All-County performer at Bowie (Maryland) High School and a letterman for Baltimore’s Morgan State University will be returning for his third season as a Mariners’ Defensive Assistant. Blackman also brings a strong coaching record in the high school and professional ranks. He served as the Defensive Backs Coach for Northwestern High School of Hyattsville, Maryland (2004 to 2005) and Bowie High School from 2005 to 2006. In 2008 he was part of the Mariners’ inaugural season coaching staff as a Defensive Backs/Linebackers Coach. In 2009, as the team’s Defensive Backs Coach, Blackman oversaw one of the American Indoor Football Association’s (AIFA) top units as Baltimore notched a league-high 42 interceptions.
Offensive Assistant Ron Meehan brings a wealth of experience as a player in the college and professional ranks and as a coach at the high school and college level. An All-County and All-State performer at Baltimore’s Woodlawn High School, Meehan then compiled an award filled career at then Towson State University (1977 to 1980) earning All-American honors from UPI, and All-American Honorable Mention notice from Kodak and Sporting News. Following his college career Meehan signed free agent contracts with the Baltimore Colts and Oakland Raiders. Meehan began his coaching career at Dulaney High School of Timonium, Maryland (1994 to 1996) as a Varsity Assistant and Junior Varsity Head Coach. From 1997 to 1999 he served as a Varsity Assistant Coach at Perry Hall (Baltimore, Maryland) High School. From 2004 to 2007 Meehan coached at the Division 1-AA level returning to his alma mater Towson University and was the Tigers Quarterbacks Coach and Passing Coordinator. During that time he mentored Towson’s all-time leading passer, Sean Schaefer. The 2010 season will be Meehan’s second with the Mariners.
Defensive Assistant Bryan Milburn will also be returning for his second season with the Mariners. A high school standout at North Hagerstown (Maryland) High School Milburn was named All-Monocacy Valley Athletic League (All-MVAL) and All-Tri-State as a center. After starting his college career at the University of Maryland Milburn went on to letter for two seasons at Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. Following four weeks with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1992, Milburn’s career was cut short by a motorcycle accident. In 2008, the Mariners’ first season, Milburn served as the team’s Defensive Line Coach. In a league where the league scoring average was nearly 40 points per game, the Mariners’ defense held opponents under 30 points three times. In 2009, Milburn returned as the Defensive Line Coach, helping lead the Mariners’ ball hawking defense, which ranked second in the AIFA with 52 takeaways, an average of four a game. In 2010, Milburn will be working with both the offensive and defensive lines.
