Fan Favorite, All-Time TD Reception Leader Scorpio Brown Signs with Baltimore
BALTIMORE, MD (September 10, 2009) – The Baltimore Mariners’ all-time touchdown reception leader, Scorpio Brown, has signed a contract to return to the indoor football team, which calls 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore home.
In 2009 Brown caught 49 passes for 567 yards and 11 touchdowns for the Mariners who finished the American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) season with a 9-5 record and earned the team’s first playoff berth. In 2008, Brown pulled in 21 receptions for 227 yards and eight scores while seeing action in only five games. He also added a 40-yard touchdown run in his only carry of the season. Brown has tallied 19 touchdown receptions, tops on the Mariners’ all-time list and ranks second in receptions (70) and yards (794).
Baltimore Head Coach Chris Simpson notes of the 6’4”, 225 pound Mariner, “Scorpio is a big, physical WR. The thing that surprises me is his ability to kick into to gear from a speed stand point. I’m looking forward to seeing more of that speed from him next season. You might see Scorpio on the defensive side of the ball a little bit more next season. “
Although the majority of his time has been spent at wide receiver in the professional ranks, the Newport News, Virginia native is no stranger to the linebacker position. In two professional seasons Brown has tallied nine tackles (8 solo/2 assists). At Warwick High School in Newport News, Scorpio pulled in 883 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns as a tight end and battered opponents for 178 tackles, 19 sacks and six interceptions as a linebacker. His offensive exploits earned him a spot on the “Daily Press Football All-Stars” first team offense, as well as the “All Peninsula” district team. He also starred in basketball and was an All-State performer in track.
Following high school, Brown stayed closed to home and played for the Hampton (Virginia) University Pirates for two seasons. Prior to his junior year he transferred to Morehouse College of Atlanta Georgia. In four seasons at the two southern schools he totaled 104 tackles, including 83 solo stops, 4.5 sacks, and two interceptions.
Football success runs in the Brown family, as Scorpio’s brother Elton played in 34 regular season games, and started 14, for the Arizona Cardinals from 2005-2008 and was part of the Cardinals historic run to Super Bowl XLIII.
