Starting QB for 2009 Playoff Run, Looked to Lead Offense in 2010
BALTIMORE, MD (September 8, 2009) – Quarterback E.J. Nemeth who led the Baltimore Mariners to a 9-5 record and the franchise’s first playoff berth in 2009, while passing 36 touchdowns and rushing for 13 more, has been re-signed by the American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) club.
In 2009 Nemeth ranked fifth in the AIFA with a total of 49 touchdowns and finished sixth in the league with 2,298 total yards by tallying 2,115 yards through the air and 183 on the ground. The 6’3”, 250 pound New Jersey resident was also viewed as a leader on the team. Mariners Head Coach Chris Simpson noted, “E.J. brings a great deal of leadership to the team. He understands our offensive system and is great at minimizing mistakes. I love his competitive spirit.”
Originally from Springfield, Massachusetts, Nemeth was an all-county performer in both football and wrestling at Notre Dame High School of Lawrenceville, New Jersey and was named the Mercer County Athlete of the Year in 2001. Nemeth then played college ball for Sacred Heart University (2001-2002) and King’s College (2003-2004). Nemeth broke into the pro ranks with the Reading Express in 2007. As the back-up quarterback he saw action in eight games and tossed five touchdowns with no interceptions while amassing a 131.11 QB rating. In 2008 he split time between the San Angelo Stampede Express and the Alaska Wild of the Intense Football League and totaled eight touchdown passes and one rushing touchdown.
In 2009, with the Mariners, Nemeth earned the starting quarterback position and started all 14 regular season games and one playoff contest. Guiding the league’s number one rushing attack, he became a rushing force of his own by finishing tied for fifth in the AIFA with 13 rushing touchdowns. He also made an impact through the air with his 36 aerial touchdown strikes.
“I expect E.J. to compete for the starting job again. I want him to continue to master the offense. I think with another season in the system, he'll get the flow of his reads and make tremendous strides in our efforts to win the AIFA championship,” commented Simpson.
