Lions Win South Division Crown

COLUMBUS, GA (June 22, 2009) – After their 61-12 win over the Florence Phantoms on Friday night, the Columbus Lions (10-3) of the American Indoor Football Association had time off to enjoy Father’s Day Weekend and winning the AIFA’s southern division title with Fayetteville losing to Carolina.
With only a one game deficit, the Guard had the opportunity of winning the division if they won their remaining games including a June 27th matchup against Columbus. Fayetteville and Columbus would have finished tied and the Guard would have won the division crown due to the first tiebreaker being head-to-head matchups. “We were prepared to go up to Fayetteville and have the fight of our lives on Saturday,” says Head Coach Jason Gibson. “Instead we can go up there without a great amount of pressure on our backs.”
The Lions clinched the southern title thanks to the Carolina Speed’s 45-40 defeat of Fayetteville on Saturday night. Clinching the division crown was vital for the Lions considering they are undefeated at home while going 3-3 on the road. Going on the road for the playoffs is something Columbus knows all about, as last season the Lions were upended in the first round of the playoffs by the Mississippi Mudcats.
Even though they clinched home field for the first round, Saturday’s night game still has huge implications for the Lions as another win would make the road to championship game in Wyoming come thru Columbus by securing the tiebreaker over the north division champs Reading Express. Considering the Express and Lions could possibly close the season with identical records and have not played each other the tiebreaker would come down to common opponents.
“We can’t get too far ahead of ourselves but making sure we have home field throughout is very important,” continues Head Coach Jason Gibson. “Fayetteville, Reading, and Baltimore are all tough teams at home and if we can have the road come thru Columbus are chances are that much better.”
The Lions first round playoff game will be held on Monday July 6th at 7:30 pm against the Fayetteville Guard. They are offering a discounted pricing structure on playoff tickets with Jungle Seats, rows A, B, and C, being reduced to $30. Lower level seats will be priced at $15 and upper level seats will be $10. Season ticket holders will be given the first right of refusal on the seats they currently hold for the 2009 season with the tickets being opened to the general public on Friday.
