COLUMBUS, GA (June 19, 2009) – Much like the 1984 comedy film Ghostbusters, actors Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, and Dan Aykroyd used proton packs to eliminate ghosts, only on Friday night the Columbus Lions (10-3) of the American Indoor Football Association didn’t need proton packs to exterminate these ghosts winning 61-12 over the defending AIFA champion Florence Phantoms (6-7).
After allowing the Lions to score on the second play of the game with a 3-yard touchdown pass from Todd Spitzer to Joel Babb, the Phantoms answered back on with a score of their own with a QB keeper from Torrey Pettigrew. On the extra point attempt the snap was fumbled allowing Columbus to maintain a 7-6 lead, the closet Florence would come to taking the lead.
Led by Lions receivers Joel Babb and Tirone Morris two touchdown grabs apiece, the Lions coasted to a 38-12 halftime lead. Morris, with the flare for the dramatic, hurled over two defenders to get his second score coming from 31 yards out. “That’s the biggest reason we play Tirone, his knack for making big plays,” says Head Coach Jason Gibson. “Morris will run through a wall if need be to make a catch, just glad all he had to do was jump over some guys this week.”
In the past Florence’s defense had presented a problem for Lions quarterbacks with the previous three showdowns stifling Columbus quarterbacks to only completing 44 of 105 pass attempts with four interceptions and three touchdowns. On Friday, starting quarterback Todd Spitzer only needed three quarters to dispense of the Phantoms, finishing the game 11 of 16 passing with five touchdowns. “It was great to finally get over that hump that was the Phantoms defense,” continues Head Coach Jason Gibson. “In past their defense had presented a problem for us, I was glad to see all our mental preparation finally pay off.”
Defensively the Lions were up to their usual stingy ways not allowing any points in the second half and collecting five interceptions. Defensive Back Damian Daniels added another two interceptions including taking one back for a score; Daniels now leads the AIFA with 16 INTS on the season. Not to be outdone by Daniels, defensive lineman Franklin Lloyd collected his second INT of the season as well as taking his back for a score.
With this win, Columbus will have to await the outcome of the Fayetteville/Carolina game taking place on Saturday night to know if they clinch the southern division title. Columbus can clinch home field with a Fayetteville loss, but if the Guard win the division title will come down to the season finale as Columbus travels to take on Fayetteville on June 26th.
