Defense: DL Wallace Artis (6’4”, 270, Furman), DL Roy Ravenell (6’2”, 270, Furman).
Special Teams: K Jad Dean (5’9”, 185, Clemson).
When the Mariners have the ball:
In their 4-4 start the Mariners averaged 43.9 points per game. In their four game winning streak, that has boosted their record to 8-4, they have averaged 56 points per game. QB E.J. Nemeth has seen his production rise from an average of two touchdowns per game (16 total) in the first eight match-ups to 3.75 per game (15 total) during the streak. His season passing TD total now stands at 31 for the year. Despite the growth in the passing game, the Mariners have still stuck true to form and continue to lead the league in rushing yards and have an AIFA second-best 30 rushing touchdowns. RB Isaiah Grier maintains his hold on the league’s rushing title and now has 19 rushing touchdowns, trailing only Wyoming’s James Jones (20) in the AIFA. For the third straight week the Mariners will face one of the league’s top defenses. South Carolina ranks fourth in total defense trailing only #1 D.C., #2 Harrisburg, and #3 Carolina. Force Lineman Wallace Artis is second in the league with 7.5 sacks.
When the Force has the ball:
It is the Andrew Webb show. No, we really mean it. In the Force’s win against the Phantoms Webb had all 12 of the Force’s rushes (56 net yards) and all 30 passes (for 244 yards). He also tallied two rushing touchdowns and tossed four scores. Receivers Isaac West and Willie Idlette both have reeled in 53 catches this season and West is among the league leaders with 828 receiving yards and 14 touchdown grabs. The Force has also protected Webb well allowing only 12 sacks (1 per game) all season. The Mariners takeaway machine continues to drive the D. They now have amassed 41 takeaways including a league-leading 31 interceptions. The team also still ranks among the league leaders in pass defense efficiency (3rd), first downs against (3rd), and sacks (5th). DB Armar Watson leads the AIFA in interceptions (15) and passes defended (33) and Richard Johnson ranks fourth in interceptions with nine, including a 47-yard return for a touchdown last week. Fearon Wright ranks fifth in sacks with 6.5.
Game Outlook:
This is a match-up of two of the AIFA’s hottest teams. The Mariners are riding a four game win streak and still have a shot at the division title. The Force has three victories in a row and sits two games out of the playoff race with two to go; but have to consider their first season a success. Oddly enough, they are 2-4 at home and 4-2 on the road, while the Mariners are 5-1 at home and 3-3 on the road. You only need to look at South Carolina’s two close wins against the Stampede (40-37 at Harrisburg and 36-30 home) to know this will be a hotly contested battle.
