CASPER, Wyo. - The top two quarterbacks in the American Indoor Football Association Western Conference will square off Friday, June 5, with huge playoff implications on the line.
Both the Utah Valley Thunder (8-2) and the Wyoming Cavalry (9-1) have clinched playoffs berths, but the winner of Friday’s 7 p.m. game in Casper will go a long way in saying where the playoff game between the two teams will be played.
Currently, the Cavalry holds a 2-1 series lead of the second-place Thunder with two head-to-head games left to play. The Thunder needs to win both to wrap up home field advantage, while winning future games with Ogden and New Mexico, while the Cavalry needs to wins their games with Ogden and New Mexico and split with Utah Valley.
Thunder quarterback Mike Affleck has throw for 2,263 yards, which is second-best in the league, and one yard better than Wyoming quarterback Matt Strand. Strand however has thrown 52 touchdowns passes to Affleck’s 45. Affleck, however, has rushed for 14 touchdowns and Strand has yet to rush to paydirt.
Utah Valley needed overtime to beat Ogden, 70-69, last week, while the Cavalry crushed New Mexico 85-6.
In the win over the Knights, Affleck accounted for 10 touchdowns (seven passing, three rushing) in completing 30-of-35 passes for a career-high 328 yards. Strand completed 15-of-29 passes for 227 yards and seven scores in the win over the Wildcats.
