Florence, S.C. - Reading Eagle
The Reading Express scored two touchdowns in the final minute Friday night to defeat the Florence Phantoms 66-55 in Florence, S.C., in a battle of American Indoor Football Association division leaders.
Quarterback Rob Flowers scored on a 1-yard run on the first play after the one-minute warning to give Reading a 59-55 lead. On the next play from scrimmage, David Smith intercepted an Omar Jacobs pass and returned in 25 yards for the clinching touchdown.
The Express (6-2) avenged its loss to the Phantoms (6-2) in last year's AIFA Eastern Conference championship game. It was Reading's first visit to Florence since the 2007 AIFA championship game the Express lost to Lakeland.
Flowers also threw five touchdowns passes and ran for another as the North Division-leading Express won its second straight on the road after a rare home loss to Baltimore. Yardon Brantley and Jeff Willis each had two TD receptions.
The defending AIFA champion Phantoms, leaders of the South Division, had a six-game winning streak snapped.
