OREM, Utah – The Utah Valley Thunder winning streak is now five and counting.
Thunder quarterback Mike Affleck went over the 1,000-yard mark by completing 17-of-26 passes for 215 yards and six touchdowns while rushing for three more in leading Utah Valley to the 62-26 American Indoor Football Association victory over the New Mexico Wildcats Monday night at the McKay Center.
For the year, Affleck has thrown for 1,193 yards and 25 touchdowns passes and he has rushed for 10 more.
With the win, the Thunder are just one game behind Wyoming for first place in the Western Division standings. Utah Valley could jump into a first-tie with a home victory over Wyoming Saturday night.
The Thunder, who haven’t lost since the season open with Wyoming on March 23, got a five-yard touchdown pass from Affleck to Quincy Jackson and a two-yard touchdown run by Affleck in the first quarter to lead 13-0. The Thunder defense held the Wildcats, who haven’t won since the first week of the season, to just 17 total yards in the first quarter.
The two teams traded two touchdowns in the second quarter. Affleck connected with Johnson for a 30-yard score and then rushed for his second touchdown of the game from a yard out to give the Thunder the 27-14 lead at the half.
Affleck threw for two more touchdowns to Jackson (26, 5) in the third quarter to put the game away.
Wide receiver Tim Simmons paced the Thunder with seven catches for 104 yards, while Jackson finished with five catches for 49 yards and four scores and Johnson tallied four catches for 52 yards and a touchdown.
The Thunder finished with 248 yards total offense, while New Mexico tallied just 157.
