Carolina leads series 1-0
Last meeting: Carolina won 59-44 (4/5/08)
Columbus, GA (March 12, 2009) – In the first of back-to-back South Division match-ups, the Columbus Lions (0-0) of the American Indoor Football Association open their 2009 season this Saturday night at 7:00 pm in Charlotte against the Carolina Speed (1-0).
Fresh off their 37-29 win last week over the defending AIFA champ Florence Phantoms, Carolina opened their 2009 campaign by staging a defensive battle and letting FB Jimmy Bell rumble through the Phantoms defense. After holding off a late first half push, the Speed seemed to turn the tide as the Phantom offense could not seem to withstand the pressure from the Carolina defensive line (statistics were unavailable at the time of this release).
Following a 10-4 season and a second consecutive trip to the playoffs, the Columbus Lions open the season with much optimism and promise. But after All-AIFA quarterback Joey Conrad underwent season-ending knee surgery, questions still linger at that position as the three-man battle between Bill Ashburn, Kevin Huff, and Chris McCoy has yet to be determined.
“If our guys play within our system and do what we ask of them, I am more than confident that anyone of our QB’s can lead us to victory,” says Head Coach Jason Gibson. “If we cannot keep up with Carolina’s physical and high energy play we will more than likely struggle on offense.”
Much of the Lions offseason was spent on improving a defense that finished in the bottom half of almost every statistical category in the AIFA despite being second in takeaways last season. “Our league is so competitive that we had to put major emphasis on defense in our recruiting and training camp,” continues Head Coach Jason Gibson. “High energy guys like Maurice Jones and Franklin Lloyd mixed in with some veterans like Justen Rivers and Damian Daniels, should lead to improvements in our defense.”
