Lions Sign Trio of Local Players
The Columbus Lions of the American Indoor Football Association are proud to announce the signing of a trio of local players. Wide receivers Chris Jackson, Joel Babb and linebacker Ryan Babb have all signed with the club this week. The Babb brothers mark the first pair of brothers to sign in Lions history.
Jackson, 6-2, 215 pound wide receiver who joins the Lions after playing part of last season with the Calgary Stampede of the Canadian Football League. He recorded 4 catches for 44 yards and 1 touchdown in three games with the Stamps. Jackson spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Pittsburgh Steelers, and New Orleans Saints after finishing a successful collegiate campaign at Millsaps College. Chris is a Phenix City native, playing his high school ball at Glenwood High School. His father is Billy Jackson who played running back for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League from 1981-1984.
Joel Babb, 6-1, 195 pound wide receiver is another Phenix City native. Joel most recently played for the Tennessee Valley Vipers of af2 where he had over 500 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns. In 2006 he played for the Odessa Roughnecks of the IFL where he snagged 118 catches for 1,507 yards and 30 total touchdowns. Babb attended the University of Alabama in 1998. In 2002 he received the Paul “Bear” Bryant Award for the Best Walk-on and the Charlie Compton Award for Christian leadership.
Ryan Babb, 6-0, 210 pound linebacker joins the Lions after playing multiple positions at Troy University. Babb saw action in 2004-2005 as a running back and full back where he had 15 carries for 64 yards and 14 receptions for 121 yards and one touchdown. In 2006 he was moved to outside linebacker where recorded 55 tackles, 7 tackles for a loss, 4.5 sacks, and 3 forced fumbles. He was the Sun Belt Conference defensive player of the week for his performance September 9th against Florida State where he tallied 9 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and 1 forced fumble. Ryan signed with the University of Alabama out of high school before transferring to Troy.
“We are fortunate to be in an area with great talent. Joel and Chris add to a receiving core that is the deepest since I have been here.” said Gibson. “Ryan is a perfect fit into our defensive scheme this year. All three of these player’s resume speak for themselves.”
