Lions Bolster Defense
December 29, 2008 (COLUMBUS, GA)- The Columbus Lions were busy this holiday season signing a trio of defensive players to bolster their defense. Linebacker Maurice Jones, defensive end Darin Damron, and defensive back Damian Daniels have been added to the clubs training camp roster.
Jones LB, 6-2, 240 pounds joins the Lions after spending the 2007 pre-season with the B.C Lions of the CFL. He spent 2005-2006 with the Washington Redskins and was then allocated to NFL Europe’s Frankfurt Galaxy. Jones was signed as an undrafted free agent out of the University of South Florida by the Green Bay Packers in 2004. While at USF, the three year starter at linebacker recorded 27 tackles for a loss and led the team in total tackles his senior year.
Damron DL, 6-4, 295 pounds rejoins the Lions after missing the majority of the 2008 season with a torn bicep. In his two games last season he recorded 3.5 tackles with 2.5 of those being for a loss. He also added two sacks and one quarterback hurry. Damron looks to provide veteran leadership to the Lion’s after playing 5 seasons in af2 and one season with the AFL’s Utah Blaze.
Daniels DB, 5-9, 170 will suit up for his third consecutive season with the Lions. The defensive back out of West Georgia is the Lions all time leader in interceptions with 28 in 28 games. He posted league best numbers in inceptions last season snaring 12 picks in 14 games earning him All-AIFA first team honors. Daniels spent training camp last season with the Georgia Force before returning to Columbus.
“We wanted to put an emphasis on defense and these three players are a testament to that.” commented Gibson. “Damian Daniels has lead the league two years in a row in interceptions, Darin Damron has excelled in AF2 over the years and is still one of the best there is at this level. Maurice brings NFL caliber talent and experience to Columbus and I expect him to be a force in this league.”
