Baltimore Mariners(Baltimore, MD) The 2009 Baltimore Mariners professional indoor football team have successfully concluded their second and final open tryout on November 15th 2008. The Mariners took a look at seventy-five unique candidates during this last try-out, with many of the potential team members stemming from the local semi-professional football circuit. Having so many guys with so many years of playing football under their collective belts, Mariners' head coach Chris Simpson and his staff were faced with the difficult task of selecting the best of the best. When the tryout concluded, Simpson and his staff delivered training camp contracts to twelve of the seventy-five hopefuls. "We had a great turn out, probably the best open tryout in my three years in Baltimore." said Coach Simpson.
While a training camp contract is a move to the next level in becoming a Baltimore Mariner, it does not guarantee a spot on the final roster. Coach Simpson and his staff have a lot of work left to do in developing and delivering the 2009 Baltimore Mariners football team to the city and fans, but compiling a pool of talent is an ideal starting point. Simpson said "We are getting closer to completing our training camp roster. I like the quality and talent of the athletes we have signed. There will be tremendous competition for those wanting to earn a roster spot. No one is a lock at any position. We'll have one or two more private, invite only tryouts that will really tell us where we are at going into training camp."
Two of the most notable signings from Saturday's tryout were veteran impact players LB Joe Macaluso and OL/DL Marques Ogden. Both Macaluso and Ogden were with the Mariners in the team's 2008 inaugural season. Macaluso came to the Mariners from division rival Reading Express and Ogden was a coach with the Mariners who stepped into role of player when injuries decimated the front line. Ogden also brings valuable NFL experience to the roster. Ogden spent time on the Baltimore Ravens roster as well as with the Tennessee Titans and the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The 2009 Baltimore Mariners begin their season at home in 1st Mariner Arena this March against the Harrisburg Stampede. The match-up will pit Stampede owner John Morris against his former team. Morris owned and operated the 2008 Baltimore Mariners. The team was sold to local businessman Alan Taylor after the conclusion of the teams inaugural season. The 2009 season schedule will be available shortly. Season tickets are on sale now at www.baltimoremariners.com.
