Three Lions re-sign with team
Tryouts Nov. 9 at Civic Center
The Columbus Lions have re-signed three players for the 2009 American Indoor Football Association season, which starts in March:
• Quarterback Joey Conrad (6-feet-4, 245 pounds, Glenville State)
• Wide receiver Gerald Gales (5-feet-10, 185 pounds, (West Alabama)
• Wide receiver Tirone Morris (6-feet, 180 pounds, Florida A&M)
Conrad was a first team All-AIFA selection following last season, when he completed 181 of 319 passes for 2,204 yards and 41 touchdowns with six interceptions.
"He's a proven winner who makes good decisions and doesn't turn the ball over," Lions coach Jason Gibson said in a press release.
Conrad has led the Lions to a 21-7 record during his three seasons in Columbus, including playoff appearances each year. He had off-season surgery to repair cartilage in his right knee.
"I feel good," Conrad said. "The surgery went well, and my rehabilitation is ahead of schedule."
Gales was a starting receiver on last season's 10-4 team. He led the team and was second in the league with 108.5 all-purpose yards per game.
Despite missing the final four regular-season games with an injured right knee, Gales finished with 70 receptions for 889 yards and 18 touchdowns in 10 games. He returned to the lineup for the playoff game in Tupelo, where he made five catches and scored three touchdowns.
Gales is expected to be ready to play after surgery to repair his damaged knee ligaments.
Morris caught four passes and scored two touchdowns during the 2007 season with the Lions before he broke his leg returning a kickoff. Last season, he began on the practice squad, then made the starting lineup to replace the injured Gales.
Morris played the final six games of last season, posting 34 catches for 469 yards and eight touchdowns.
Note: The Columbus Lions will hold a tryout for their 2009 team Nov. 9 at the Columbus Civic Center, starting at 10 a.m.
Participants will be evaluated in the 40-yard dash, the 20-yard shuttle and a variety of team and position drills. The tryout is for all positions, including kickers.
