Merritt, Conrad Top List of AIFA Western All-Stars Date: 7/30/2008 2:22:13 PM

COLUMBUS, GA (July 30, 2008) – The Columbus Lions of the American Indoor Football Association are proud to announce that seven players earned All-AIFA Western Conference awards.
Earning top nods at Wide Receiver was Anthony Merritt after completing a season that included 86 receptions, 991 yards, and 19 touchdowns. Merritt also lead the Lions in rushing with 7 touchdowns, 5 passing touchdowns, and finished the year first in all purpose yards with 1428.
Leading the Lions to their second straight playoff appearance was Quarterback Joey Conrad. Conrad earned nods after a season that included 41 passing touchdowns, 2204 yards, while amassing a passer rating of 101.45.
On the defensive side of things, Defensive Backs Damian Daniels and Keon Newson earned All-Western Conference accolades after combining to grab 33 interceptions. Daniels lead the AIFA with 12 interceptions, 6 Missed Field Goal Returns, at the same time as leading the Lions in tackles with 49.5. Newson finished the 2008 season with 11 interceptions including two that were returned for touchdowns.
Even though he only played in 8 games, Kicker Hunter Smith completed the season collecting 105 points. Smith finished the year with the leagues top kicking percentage (62%) after completing 13 of 21 field goal attempts and notching 51 of 60 PAT attempts and also leading in rouge kicks with 15.
Also earning nods was Offensive Lineman Monreko Crittenden and Hagen Mason. Both were apart of a Lions offensive line that allowed only 19 sacks on 465 passing attempts. Crittenden also part of the trend of Lions players moving up to the next level by joining the AFL’s Los Angeles Avengers midway through the season.
