COLUMBUS, GA (July 16, 2008) – The Columbus Lions of the American Indoor Football Association would like to send out a special thanks to all their fans and sponsors for a great 2008 season.
Taking a look back at their inaugural season in the AIFA, the Columbus Lions enjoyed a successful season on and off the field concluding with their second straight playoff appearance.
Finishing the regular season with a 10-4 record, including a 5-1 record within the Southern Division, the Lions finished tops in the AIFA in many offensive categories. They led in passing offense with 227 yards per game led by their tandem of Quarterbacks completing 267 completions and a 57.4 passing percentage.
The Lions also continued the trend of sending players to the next level by sending players to the AFL. Anthony Merritt (WR 5’11 195, North Alabama) joined the Colorado Crush and Monreko Crittenden (OL 6’4 350, Auburn) signed with the Los Angeles Avengers. Before joining the Crush, Merritt was leading the AIFA in receptions with 86. Crittenden started on a Lions Offensive Line that only allowed 8 sacks with 213 passing attempts thru 6 games prior to linking up with the Avengers.
Off the field, Columbus enjoyed an increase in attendance by over 4,000 fans in 2008 with successful promotions like “Military Night” and “Business Appreciation Night.” The introduction of the first ever Youth Indoor Football League helped 9 and 10 year olds experience first hand, the fast paced and thrilling action of indoor football. The Lions also launched a successful “Lion-up to Read Tour” partnering up with the Literacy Alliance conducting a book drive and featuring players visiting 16 near-by schools.
Looking forward to the 2009, season tickets are already on sale. Fans can contact the Lions Front Office at 706-322-3DEN or contact Jeff Gonos by email at jeff@columbuslions.net to get your Jungle seats today!
