Lions' Merritt Joins AFL Crush
COLUMBUS, GA (June 25, 2008) – The Columbus Lions of the American Indoor Football Association are proud to announce that Wide Receiver Anthony Merritt (5’11 195, North Alabama) has signed a contract to play with the AFL Colorado Crush as they make their 2008 playoff push.
Merritt initially signed a contract with the Crush back in December of 2007 but was given his release after training camp. Anthony joined his hometown Lions and led them into the AIFA’s 2008 playoffs before getting called back up to the AFL’s Crush.
He has been one of the offensive leaders for the Lions during their push to AIFA playoffs. Anthony finished the season as the AIFA’s leading reception leader with 86 while finishing with 991 receiving yards.
For the 2008 regular season, Merritt led the team in all purpose yards with 1428 and combined to be apart of 32 touchdowns. Not only did the former Harlon Hill candidate lead the team in receiving, he also led the team in rushing with 7 rushing touchdowns and also pitched in with 5 passing touchdowns.
“Its tough losing a player that has contributed in so many ways for this club, especially at this time of the year,” says Head Coach Jason Gibson. “It’s something we pride ourselves in with moving players up to the next level and fulfilling their football dreams.”
