COLUMBUS, GA (June 19, 2008) – In a rematch from Week 7, the Columbus Lions (9-4) of the American Indoor Football Association will be squaring off against the Fayetteville Guard (5-7) in the battle of “Ft. Benning vs. Ft. Bragg Part II” this Saturday at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, North Carolina at 7:30pm.
For the Lions they already know their fate lies against Mississippi in the first round after a sealing a spot in the playoffs last week. However, this game will be crucial for the Guard as Fayetteville looks to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Last week, the Guard defeated the Florida Stingrays 50-21 thanks in large part to the play of Quarterback Shawn Withy-Allen. In his second game back, Allen went 11 of 16 passing with 3 touchdown passes. Shawn helped lead the Guard to the NIFL Championship last season.
The last time Columbus and Fayetteville met, the Lions defeated the Guard 75-16 thanks in large part to Wide Receiver Gerald Gales 8 receptions, 125 yards, and 5 touchdown night. At the time, the Guard was under Interim Head Coach Mitch Galloway. Since then former Huntington Heroes Defensive Coordinator Charles Gunnings has taken over the reigns, Charles was the Guard’s Head Coach last season leading the Guard to the undefeated record and NIFL Championship.
After holding off an heroic comeback from the Huntington Heroes last week and clinching a playoff spot, this week’s game will more than likely mean that a couple of Lions starters will rest to get ready for the playoffs. Coach Gibson has already indicated that Lions QB Joey Conrad will only play the first half and Wide Receiver Gerald Gales will sit out for the second straight week.
