Tonight's game was a tough loss. We had a very good crowd, jumped out to a 14-0 lead and then played the worst game I've seen us play in two years.
On a positive note, I thought the defense played well. Bullard is a stud. We had only given up 28 points up until the end of the third. We gave them a short field several times which helped them in the fourth. If our offense plays the way it is capable of, our defense showed tonight that it can get the job done. Jacobs is a great qb. His strength and athleticism really paid off. Our d-Line was in his face and hitting him all game and he managed to get rid of the ball.
I thought the coaches did a great job. Coach Sullivan had the defense schemed perfectly. Florence had some plays that utilized Jacobs' athleticism and our guys didn't bite on them - coach Sullivan had them prepared.
Coach Gibson had the offense in a position to win. Dropped balls and missed recievers at crucial times did us in. The game plan was there.
Offensively, Joey missed some recievers and had a few chances where if he'd thrown the ball right as the reciever came out of his break we'd have had big gains but he threw it too late. However, the recievers had too many dropped balls to count. For some reason, everyone looked out of sinc to me. Maurice came in and made one mistake that lead to a td for the defense, but his second drive was stalled by a dropped pass and then a fumble. Florence seemed to pin its ears back and come after Joey. Monreko left a big void to fill (but I'm glad he moved up to the AFL of course). However, overall, I didn't think the O-Line played poorly. I'd love to see us pick up a running back so that the threat of the run would be there and the D-Line from the other team would not know we are passing every play. We miss Goodman - he had some big plays for us last year and his presence at least slowed the rush.
Despite all this, we had the ball with a chance to win with 21 seconds on the clock at the end of the game. We played our worst game against a good team and had a chance to win. I'm sure the team will learn from this game. If we play even partially up to our potential, we can beat Florence or anyone else in this league.
Lets hope we get it all together for our last home game next week and then don't have a letdown against Fayetteville (or go in overconfident). We've got the coaching staff and players to do it.
