LIONS SCORE AS LEADERS IN LITERACY Date: 5/22/2008 1:33:41 PM
Columbus, GA (May 22, 2008) – The Columbus Lions of the American Indoor Football Association have visited a total of 11 elementary schools in the past month, carrying out their “Lion Up to Read” tour by teaming up with the Muscogee County School District and the Literacy Alliance.
The “Lion Up to Read” tour allowed the players to share the importance of literacy with the students as well as show students how literacy can have a great impact on their futures. Lions’ players discussed graduating from high school, having respect for peers and how literacy goes beyond just reading books.
“I didn’t like reading before but now I love reading, “ J.D. Davis Elementary School 4th grade student Deiona said, “You guys really encouraged me to read and I learned a lot from you all.”
Aside from the “Lion Up to Read” tour, the Lions have participated in local elementary schools’ Field Day, Career Day and Fifth Grade Graduation. Through these programs the Lions were able to provide insight on different careers and the importance of education, engage in physical education with the students and even present awards to students for all of their achievements this school year.
The Lions and the Literacy Alliance have partnered up to help support those who are not fortunate enough to have books with a donation drive. Any person who brings a children’s book to any of the Lions’ remaining home games can register any child of their choice (Ages 5-18) for a Gift of Learning from Sylvan valued at $1600, a chance to participate in the Lions’ opening coin toss for their June 15th game against Huntington and receive an autographed football and t-shirt.
Be sure to bring a book to any remaining Lions home game. For more information contact the Lions front office at 706-322-3DEN or contact Barbara Mushon with Literacy Alliance at 706-748-2610 or at literacyalliance@earthlink.net.
