Receiver catches six touchdowns
BY CARL BLEICH - Special to the Ledger-Enquirer --
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Florida Stingrays are going to have nightmares about Silas Daniels.
The Columbus Lions wide receiver caught six touchdown passes and the Lions crushed the Stingrays 63-25 at the Lee Civic Center Saturday night.
Daniels had touchdown receptions of 25, 47 and 20 yards in the second quarter alone as Columbus outscored the Stingrays 36-0 in that quarter to take a 47-3 lead into halftime.
The former Auburn wideout finished with 10 receptions for 169 yards receiving. Florida had 167 yards of total offense as a team.
The Stingrays fell to 0-6. They have been outscored 137-31 in their last two contests.
"We just can't seem to get over that hump," Stingray coach BJ Jernigan said. "I don't know what it is going take to get over that hump. This is a tough league."
Daniels' fumbled reverse handoff on Columbus' first drive forced the Lions (5-2) to settle for a field goal on their first drive.
However, it was all downhill after that as starting quarterback A.J. Rowque completed just four passes and tossed three interceptions before being pulled at halftime. One of those interceptions was returned 23 yards for a touchdown by Keon Newson, brother of Stingray wideout Kendall Newson.
Keon Newson intercepted two passes on the night.
Lions quarterback Joey Conrad finished with 204 passing yards and seven touchdowns.
Rowque finished the night 4-of-17 for 40 yards.
"I don't know if A.J. was nervous or had stage fright or what," Jernigan said. "He has played indoor ball, but I don't know what happened."
Kendall Newson scored the Stingrays' first touchdown when he caught a 35-yard pass from backup quarterback Ryan McCutcheon. The Stingrays cashed in on their next drive as well as Richard Washington caught a 30-yard pass from McCutcheon. Ray Denson also caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from McCutcheon.
Newly signed Roy Stabler intercepted a pass for the Stingrays in the third quarter.
McCutcheon finished the contest 7-of-14 for 126 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.
