Adrenaline Rout Wildcats - again
PRESCOTT VALLEY - Arizona Adrenaline quarterback Chad DeGrenier's theory on how to win a football game was a simple one - score each time you get the ball.
The Adrenaline did just that Saturday night, putting 11 touchdowns on the board in a wild 79-43 shellacking of the New Mexico Wildcats in front of about 3,500 fans at Tim's Toyota Center.
DeGrenier, who missed last week's game at Wyoming, was nearly perfect, tossing eight touchdowns to four different receivers, including four to Quincy Jackson as the Adrenaline improve to 2-1 on the year while New Mexico slips to 1-2.
"We made some adjustments at halftime, and our guys realized that we had to come out stronger, and we did," head coach Andrew Moore said. "I thought the defense tightened up in the second half."
New Mexico pulled to within 28-20 with 8:33 left in the second quarter. But the Adrenaline answered the challenge on their next possession when DeGrenier hit Jackson twice to take the ball down to the Wildcat 11 before finding David Penland on an 11-yard TD pass, Penland's first catch of the season in his first game as a professional.
But the play that might have been the clincher occurred early in the fourth quarter. With New Mexico at the Adrenaline 1-yard line and only trailing by 14 points, new acquisition Sydney Hayes, who played for New Mexico earlier in the year, stuffed Wildcat tailback Lindrick Brodie at the line of scrimmage. The Adrenaline promptly took the ball back down for another TD that all but sealed the deal.
DeGrenier was an amazing 21-of-30 for 251 yards and eight TDs. In two games he now has 14 touchdown passes and has yet to throw an interception, as the Adrenaline get set to host the Utah Saint next Sunday at TTC, beginning at 4 p.m.
The Adrenaline also got four touchdowns on the ground, led by Ty Evans with two, while Paris Moore and DeGrenier added one each.
Defensively, linebacker Nick Hannah, playing his first game, was credited with nine solo tackles, while fellow linebacker Chris Whitaker had six and safety Kentrell Williams had five tackles, two interceptions, one of them for a touchdown as the Adrenaline outscored New Mexico 44-16 in the second half.
