LIONS SET TO BATTLE SPEED Date: 4/3/2008 2:52:18 PM
COLUMBUS, GA (Apr. 3, 2008) – Coming off their latest road victory in Baltimore, the Columbus Lions (2-1) of the American Indoor Football Association look to stay undefeated on the road as they take on the Carolina Speed (2-2) on Saturday April 5th at Carrabus Arena in Concord, North Carolina.
Last week, back-up Quarterback Maurice Mullins stepped in for injured starter Joey Conrad to lead the Lions past Baltimore 67-39. Set to start again this week, Mullins combined to score 6 touchdowns, 4 from the air and 2 by ground attack. The Lions have been led by their high scoring offense and menacing passing attack. Thru the first 4 weeks, the offense leads the league in points scored with 169 and total number of yards passing from the air with 682 yards.
Thanks to great protection, Lions quarterbacks should have plenty of time in the pocket this week against Carolina as the Speed have only registered 1 sack in four games. Much like Columbus, Carolina’s offense is orchestrated from the air as the Speed average 166 yards passing per game. The Speed offense is also not afraid to play some smash mouth football as they have recorded 8 rushing touchdowns, tied for the league best with Huntington.
“Carolina should be a good test for our defense with them having a former NFL quarterback”, says Head Coach Jason Gibson. “In order to be successful our defense must continue to create turnovers and eliminate big plays.”
