LIONS MAKE MARINERS WALK THE PLANK Date: 3/29/2008 2:02:34 AM COLUMBUS, GA (Mar. 28, 2008) – In the first start of his arena career, quarterback Maurice Mullins scored 6 total touchdowns leading the Columbus Lions of the American Indoor Football Association over the Baltimore Mariners 67 - 39. After making the thirteen-hour road trip to Baltimore, the Lions offense compiled 251 total yards and converted on 4 of 5 red-zone trips. Completing 22 of 34 pass attempts, Mullins torched the Mariners defense for 239 yards and 4 touchdowns while rushing for two touchdowns. Gerald Gales was the favorite target of the night, catching 9 passes for 125 yards and 1 touchdown. Led by Keon Newson and his five tackles, the Lions defense scored 3 times on 5 turnovers. Newson also forced a fumble and returned a 48-yard interception for a touchdown at the end of the third quarter. Rickie Lewis collected three sacks as the Lions held the Mariners to only 1 third down conversion on 6 attempts. “I’m not surprised by his performance, and I don’t think his teammates were either,” says Head Coach Jason Gibson on Mullins performance. “Even though we won, we still have a lot of mistakes to correct and limit the big plays on defense,” continues Gibson. The Lions will once again hit the road next week as they will travel to Carolina and face a tough Speed team on Saturday April 5th.
