COLUMBUS, GA (Mar 23. 2008) – The Columbus Lions of the American Indoor Football Association lost to the Erie River Rats in their home opener on Saturday 54 – 48.
The Lions had a chance to pull within a tie with less than a minute, but the drive was stalled by a caused fumble on a sack. Despite being held to only 13 completions, River Rats quarterback Jarrod Highberger threw for 5 touchdowns and 188 yards passing. The River Rats defense pitched in with three turnovers including two that were returned for scores. River Rats defensive back, Jovon Johnson was the defensive MVP with 7.5 tackles and one interception returned 51 yards for a touchdown.
The Lions offense took a big loss on Saturday after quarterback Joey Conrad suffered a dislocated left shoulder mid-way through the second quarter. Early preliminary is that he will out for 2 - 5 weeks.
At one point in the second half, the Lions were down by 16 points. Back-up Maurice Mullins led the charge filling for Conrad in the second half completing 11 of 19 passed and throwing for 3 touchdowns. The Lions defense back Cedric Ware intercepted a pass with 1:12 left, which gave the Lions the last minute chance to tie.
“In order to win in any league, you must minimize on your mistakes, tonight we didn’t do that,” says Head Coach Jason Gibson. “I was impressed with how Mullins stepped in the second half and brought us back. Were going to work hard and get ready for Baltimore,” continued Gibson.
