LIONS READY FOR HOME OPENER Date: 3/21/2008 9:40:52 AM
COLUMBUS, GA (Mar. 21, 2008) – The Columbus Lions of the American Indoor Football Association host the Erie River Rats this Saturday in their home opener at the Columbus Civic Center at 7:00 pm.
The Lions enter their contest against the River Rats off the heels of winning their inaugural game in the AIFA against their in-state rival Augusta 54-44. Led by quarterback Joey Conrad, the game featured a second quarter in which both clubs combined to score 5 touchdowns and 41 points. Conrad would finish the game passing for 251 yards and 4 touchdowns while completing 18 of 32 passes.
The River Rats started there second season in the AIFA with an opening week win over Carolina 42-21 and a last second hold in week 2 against Canton 38-24. Lead by their defense, the River Rats have held opponents to only five red zone trips while only allowing one score. Their defense is holding opponents to 24 points per game only allowing 6 touchdowns in two games.
This sets the stage for what should be an interesting battle that features the Lions high-octane offense and a fast River Rats defense that forces you to cause turnovers. “If we can play mistake free football and cut down on the penalties, our chances for success will be very good playing Erie,” says Head Coach Jason Gibson.
