Lions Host Open Tryout of 50 Participants
10/22/07 - American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) Columbus Lions
Columbus, GA - On Saturday, the Columbus Lions held their first tryout at Memorial Stadium, which saw 50 participants try to chase their dream of playing professional football. The daylong session saw participants get evaluated in pro style drills and game type situations.
Coming off the brink of winning the inaugural WIFL World Bowl, the Lions set out on Saturday to find a diamond in the rough that could help them continue their championship ways. The Lions were feeling confident considering a diamond they found in last years open tryout in Damian Daniels. Daniels would enjoy a successful 2007 season that saw him earn Co-Defensive WIFL Player of The Year. "We were pleased with the level of talent that came out today, we know that we have a huge hotbed of football talent in the Georgia/Alabama region to evaluate," says Head Coach Jason Gibson.
The Lions coaching staff evaluated participants in drills such as the 40-yard dash, the 20-yard short shuttle, and a variety of team and individual drills by position. "Running game-type situational drills really allows you to find those prospects who really stand out from the others," says Coach Gibson. The participant who excelled the most on this try-out day was Corey Britton. Britton first caught the eye of the Lions coaching staff with his 4.41 in the 40-yard dash on the natural grass surface. At 6'4" 205 pounds, Britton previously played football at The University of West Georgia where he played both wide receiver and kick returner for the Wolves. "Prior to the tryouts I felt confident in my speed, and now that I have been given this opportunity I feel a great sense of relief placed off my shoulders," says Britton.
The Lions will hold a second open tryout on December 15 at Callaway Stadium in LaGrange, Georgia. The tryout will allow participants to be evaluated in the same type of pro style drills and game type situation.
