General Manager John Wolfe announced several changes in the Baltimore Blackbirds front office, coaching staff, and roster today. “We have just completed a top to bottom review of the organization, and along with that, obviously no one is happy with the 0-6 start. To finish this season on a strong note and to build a solid foundation for the 2008 season, we felt several changes were needed,” stated Wolfe.
Wolfe announced that in addition to his head coaching duties, Chris Simpson, would also now be the Director of Player Personnel. “Quite simply, no one knows better then Chris, the type of players he needs to make his system work. That coupled with the strong network of arena/indoor football contacts he has will serve the organization well in obtaining key players to finish this season on an up note and get players under contract, which we can build around for next season,” said Wolfe.
Damon Yaffe has moved from the coaching staff to become the Director of Scouting and Quality Control. Wolfe noted, “We are looking to Damon to build a national scouting network which will bring the Blackbirds the highest caliber player’s possible. This is one of the largest markets in indoor football. It also the proud home of the Ravens and within hours of six NFL franchises as well as several AFL teams. That coupled with the quality control elements Damon will instill should put the Blackbirds at the top of any players’ list. We want to leave no doubt in any player’s mind that Baltimore is the place to be.”
Quarterback Theron Davis is making the shift from player to coaching staff as the Quarterbacks/Wide Receiver Coach. “Theron brings a wealth of experience from his AFL and NFL playing days, which will serve the team well. It will enable the young players who fill our roster to have a mentor as well as a coach and someone who can dedicate full attention to their development,” stated Wolfe. Due to other commitments, which were placing a strain on his commitments with the Blackbirds, Wide Receiver Coach Robert Hammond was released yesterday.
Several players were also released yesterday including QB Kenny Irby, RB David Johnson, LB Chris Robinson, DB Brandon Cooper, and offensive lineman Aaron Bailey, Elex Jones, and Julius Carey. Many players who have been on the reserve squad or through workouts with the team should see action this week against the Florence Phantoms, including QB Canese Smith (6’2”, 190), FB/LB Albert Jones (5’11”, 220), and OL/DL Julian Harris (6’5”, 290).
