William Stewart: Mississippi MudCat
By TIM TUTOR
Pontotoc’s Coach William Stewart, as most already know, is back in arena football.
Nowadays, Stewart heads up the Pontotoc High powerlifting team while teaching six P.E. classes at the high school and fifth and sixth grade level each day, and volunteering his time after school with the PHS track and field kids that throw the shot put and discuss.
Coach Stewart’s slate is full again, now that playing football is back in the mix.
“I have a lot of irons in the fire, and I will have to start early and end late, but I’ve done it before and it won’t be a big deal,” Stewart said. “Between all that and powerlifting, and trying to stay in shape to play football again, I’ve got a pretty full day.”
Stewart, a 300 lb. lineman, played for the National Indoor Football League in Michigan and Arkansas before his four-year stint in Tupelo with the now defunct Fireants.
“I’m going back at it again, but I can pretty much assure you, this is probably going to be it,” said the Mississippi Valley State four-year starter of his playing time with the newly formed Mississippi Mudcats of the American Indoor Football Association that call Unicel Field at the BancorpSouth Arena in Tupelo their home.
“This is going to be the last round.”
In a pre-season Daily Journal article, Stewart was reported to be taking on the role of a coach, as well as a player for the Mudcats. But, according to Stewart, arena football is a professional sport, and, even with the contract signed, “I still had to get through camp. I still had to make the team.
“As a coach, I have some say-so, but I didn’t take on the full role of coaching. That would have put too much on me.”
Maybe the term player/coach might be appropriate. “No,” quipped the 1997 Pontotoc High graduate. “It’s a player/person-with-a-whole-lot-of-information-to-share at times.”
With consecutive wins over Pittsburgh, Montgomery, Lakeland and Gulf Coast, Stewart and the undefeated Mudcats, averaging just under 58 points per game, travel to Tallahassee for their first road game of the season Saturday, March 10.
