TUPELO - Another Saturday night, another good crowd, another MudCats victory.
The Mississippi MudCats improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the South Division in their inaugural season, beating the Lakeland Thunderbolts 46-36 at the BancorpSouth Arena.
Quarterback Tommy Jones threw six touchdown passes, including four to Josh Smith (40, 4, 3, 2). The first and last passes of the night for Jones were TDs to Smith.
For the third week in a row, a crowd in the range of 5,000 was treated to a victory by the home team, which signed a contract extension to play here again in 2008.
"We beat a really good team tonight," said MudCats coach Brian Brents, who was Lakeland's offensive coordinator last season. "We had Nos. 1 and 2 here tonight. There are no two teams that can play with us. We're really excited about our start, and we've just got to keep the momentum."
The Mudcats led 19-18 at halftime and never trailed in the second half.
The home team put it away when, leading 39-30 midway through the fourth quarter, defensive lineman Naton Stewart (Southern Miss) forced a fumble by Lakeland QB Ass Pogi. Stewart returned it to the 10, then lateraled to teammate Joe Clark who carried it into the endzone.
Jones passed for 167 yards and was intercepted once.
The MudCats' season-opening homestand continues next Saturday with a visit from the expansion Gulf Coast (Fla.) Pirates.
